Lionel Briand says...

Software development, being a human-intensive process, involves many interdependent and complex decisions that must be taken in context. How to support such decisions based on data collection and analysis, is an important multidisciplinary field of research often referred to as "software development analytics".

There are a number of challenges that this research community and practitioners must face in developing such decision support. A wide diversity across software development organizations affects whether a given approach is applicable or even meaningful in a given context. This makes the reuse of experience and results rather complex from one environment to the other. Data collection and analysis must also remain at a reasonable cost and not be perceived as intrusive.
